[WDBr Entrevista – Elenco] Adrian Kali Turner (Duane)

Adrian Kali Turner, o Duane em The Walking Dead, bateu um super papo com o WDBr e falou um pouco sobre sua carreira, vida pessoal, além de revelar como seria a “arma” dos seus sonhos para utilizar em um apocalipse zumbi. O ator ainda nos mandou um super presentinho que vocês vão ver no final da entrevista! *o* Confiram mais um super jogo de perguntas que realizamos com um membro do elenco!

WalkingDeadBr: You’ve worked in many series as FlashForward, Numb3rs, Chuck, and others. Do you see any difference in them if compared to The Walking Dead? In the sense of grandeur of the series and their performance?

Adrian Kali Turner: Well, the subject matter was quite different. My character was not in any danger in any of my other roles. In The Walking Dead, my character was in danger and could lose his life. Also, in The Walking Dead, I played a different type of role because I was required to be a lot more dramatic. The majority of the other roles were comedies. The only other role that came close to this was when I played “Joel” in the Hollywood/Bollywood film, “My Name is Khan.” In that movie, my character also faced a dangerous situation.

WDBr: How did you describe Duane?s personality?

AKT: Duane is a good kid. He is very well-mannered. Duane is definitely a young kid. But, the zombie apocalypse forces him to grow up very fast and protect himself. He also feels like he has to protect his dad. Duane still wants to do kid things like play outside with his friends. So, he is sad that he cannot do this. Duane thinks about his mother more than he lets on. This also makes him sad. When he thinks about his mom, he also feels anger towards the zombies.

WDBr: For those who followed the comic, know the Duane’s destiny in history. However, Robert Kirkman said in an old interview: “If you need to kill Rick to make the story becomes even better, we kill!” So, we can see many changes between the comic and the show, which was revealed by Robert. So the question that I would like to do is: Does Duane would be prepared to lose his father and live “alone” in the midst of Zombie Apocalypse?

AKT: That’s a hard questions. Since Duane already lost his mother, he would be devastated if he lost his dad, too. But he would definitely be able to survive. His dad has taught him so much about survival. Duane would feel that his dad wanted him to keep fighting to survive. His dad taught him how to use weapons and survive in the wilderness. His father taught him to persevere and “kick butt.” Also, Duane is pretty eager to start using a gun to kill zombies. So knowing that he can begin using a gun will keep him pumped up and ready to fight off zombies.

WDBr: Duane and his father were in a fragile situation, with few supplies and weapons, you’d think with the arrival of Rick there was more hope for them that there are survivors in this apocalypse of the undead?

AKT: Yes. Knowing that there were other survivors means that there was hope for Duane and Morgan. For Duane and Morgan, being in a group would make it easier for them to fight off the zombies.

WDBr: Duane and Morgan opted to stay, while Rick went to his destiny to find his wife, do you think that was a good choice to preserve their survival?

AKT: No. It would have been better for them to go with Rick because even if Rick did not find his family, the three of them together would have a better chance of fighting off zombies. Plus Rick had access to more weapons. But, Morgan and Duane stayed because they didn’t want to leave the mom. I can understand that. The mother kept coming to this house, and this gave Duane and Morgan hope that she knew who they were and would get better one day.

WDBr: Morgan, as dad, is fearless and does everything to rid your child of these “freaks” behind the scenes, how’s your relationship with Lennie James?

AKT: It was great. He really was kinda like a dad to me. He even called me son when were just hanging out on set. We shared stories about our families and friends. Did you know that he really has a strong British accent? That is how awesome of an actor he is. You couldn’t even tell. He has two daughters. So, he could definitely relate to kids. I’d like to visit him in London, one day.

WDBr: About the choice of paper, how was your test to join the cast?

AKT: First, I submitted a video tape of myself because we were in Los Angeles at the time. I was working on another project. After I submitted the tape, I was called to come to Atlanta to meet with the casting director and producer. Following that meeting, my agent called me to tell me that I had the job. The great thing about it all is that I live in Atlanta. So, I got to be home for a few weeks before heading to Los Angeles. I am very honored that Mr. Frank Darabont and Ms. Gale-Ann Hurd saw me as Duane.

WDBr: What made you create interest in playing Duane?

AKT: I have always had a genuine love for comic books. But, I had never read The Walking Dead, before. As soon as I heard about the audition, I immediately went to the bookstore and bought a few issues of “The Walking Dead.” After reading the comic, I immediately fell in love with the story and character Duane and knew that I wanted to play Duane. The story was very interesting and different. Duane’s character was also very different from many of the other roles that I had played. I like playing characters that get to show different emotions.

WDBr: Duane is in the situation that he has to “accelerate” their growth in a way to survive in a world overrun by undead. How to play a character like that?

AKT: I try to become Duane as much as possible by putting myself in his situation. I try to think of the most dangerous situation I have been in and I go there. This makes it real to me. I thought about how I would feel if I lived in a house, knowing that there were monsters or zombies outside waiting to attack me. I thought about how said I would feel if I lost my mother. This helped me prepare for the sad scenes. I also thought about how angry I would be at the the monsters that took away my mom. I would be really pissed off at them for doing that. So, I could not just feel sad and do nothing. I knew I had to act very mature in protecting myself and my dad.

WDBr: It reflects in your personal life?

AKT: In my personal life, I am sometimes in situations when I have to act mature. Sometimes I may want to cry and fall apart when I must choose not to cry but think out the situation and move forward.

WDBr: If the zombie apocalypse actually happened, you think you could survive? Would some sort of plan, or wouldn’t know what to do?

AKT: Yes. I would survive. I think that I would definitely know how to beat a zombie over the head with a shovel. I would know how to hide from the zombies. I would know how to board up the windows in a home and even cook a can of beans. I would know that I must avoid a crowd of zombies because the crowd is more dangerous. I can definitely take out one zombie at a time. Also, I would know when to stay inside because the zombies are more active at night. This would make it easier for me to avoid them. I would also build my dream weapon of choice, which would be a motorcycle with a stick taped across the handlebars and two chain saws on each end. Then I could ride through a crowd of zombies and cut them up. That would be fun.

WDBr: You already knew or followed the comic The Walking Dead?

AKT: I started reading the comic when I learned about the audition. I now own every volume in hardback.

WDBr: If you don’t, is following now? What are you thinking, agree with the fans who say the comic is superior to the series, or believes that the series really did a better job?

AKT: The comic is awesome! But, the series was done very well and stuck to the overall storyline. There were a few differences, but the differences did not really change the story. If the series had changed the story a whole lot, then I probably would have said that the comic is superior.

WDBr: Did you visit Brazil? If not, wanna?

AKT: No. I have never been to Brazil.
Definitely. I would love to visit Brazil. I hear that it is a beautiful country. My passport is current and I am homeschooled. So, I am ready to go whenever.

WDBr: The fans here are crazy about The Walking Dead and the cast! We are hoping to see more of Duane and his father in this season!

AKT: Me too! Tell all of the fans to send letters and emails to the AMC office in Hollywood, asking for more of Duane, Morgan and Duane’s mom.

WDBr: Did your parents supports you in your career?

AKT: Yes. My parents are my biggest fans and supporters. They are the ones who made it possible for me to pursue my dream to be a performing artist.

WDBr: How’s the relation work-family to you?

AKT: It is great. Either my mom or dad is always on set and travels with me. So, we are together all of the time. Also, I am homeschooled. This makes it easier for me to audition, work and travel. This is not work for me because it is so much fun.

WalkingDeadBr: Você já trabalhou em vários outros seriados como FlashForward, Numb3rs, Chuck, entre outros. Você vê alguma diferença neles se comparando a The Walking Dead? No sentido de grandiosidade da série e do seu desempenho?

Adrian Kali Turner: Bem, o papel foi bem diferente. Meu personagem não estava em perigo em nenhum outro papel que fiz. Em The Walking Dead, meu personagem estava em perigo e podia perder a vida. Além disso, em The Walking Dead, eu fiz um tipo de papel diferente, porque me pediram para ser muito mais dramático. A maioria dos outros papéis era de comédia. O que chegou mais perto disso foi quando fiz o “Joel” no filme de Hollywood/Bollywood, “My Name is Khan.” Naquele filme, meu personagem também enfrentou uma situação perigosa.

WDBr: Como você descreveria a personalidade de Duane?

AKT: O Duane é uma boa criança. Ele é muito educado. Duane é definitivamente uma criança. Mas o apocalipse zumbi força-o a crescer bem rápido e a se proteger. Ele também sente que deve proteger seu pai. O Duane ainda quer fazer coisas de criança, como sair para brincar com os amigos. Então ele fica triste por não poder fazer isso. O Duane pensa na própria mãe mais do que parece. Isso também o deixa triste. Quando ele pensa na mãe, também sente raiva dos zumbis.

WDBr: Para quem acompanhou a HQ, sabemos o destino de Duane na história. Porém, Robert Kirkman declarou em uma antiga entrevista: “Se for preciso matar o Rick para que a história fique ainda melhor, mataremos!” Ou seja, podemos ver várias modificações da HQ na série, pelo que foi revelado por Robert. Então, a pergunta que gostaria de te fazer era: Será que Duane estaria preparado para perder seu pai e viver “sozinho” em meio ao Apocalipse Zumbi?

AKT: É uma pergunta difícil. Já que o Duane já perdeu a mãe, ele ficaria arrasado se também perdesse o pai. Mas com certeza conseguiria sobreviver. Seu pai ensinou muito sobre sobrevivência. Duane sentiria que seu pai queria que ele continuasse lutando pela própria vida. Seu pai ensinou a ele sobre como usar armas e sobreviver a vida selvagem. Também ensinou a ser perseverante e “Chutar bundas.” Além disso, Duane está bem ansioso para começar a usar uma arma para matar zumbis. Saber que vai poder começar a usar uma arma vai mantê-lo pronto para lutar contra os zumbis.

WDBr: Duane e seu pai estavam em uma situação frágil, com poucos suprimentos e armamento, você acha que com a chegada de Rick houve mais esperanças para eles de que há sobreviventes nesse apocalipse de mortos vivos?

AKT: Sim. Saber que haviam outros sobreviventes significou uma esperança para Duane e Morgan. Para Duane e Morgan, estar em um grupo tornaria mais fácil a luta contra os zumbis

WDBr: Duane e Morgan optaram por ficar, enquanto Rick seguia seu destino que era procurar sua esposa, você acha que foi uma boa escolha para preservar sua sobrevivência?

AKT: Não. Seria melhor para eles ir com o Rick, porque mesmo se ele não encontrasse sua família, os três juntos teriam uma chance melhor de enfrentar os zumbis. Além disso, Rick tinha acesso a mais armas. Mas Morgan e Duane ficaram porque não queriam deixar a mãe. Eu entendo isso. A mãe continuava indo à casa, e isso deu aos dois uma esperança de que ela soubesse quem eles eram, e que pudesse ficar melhor algum dia.

WDBr: Morgan é um pai determinado, e faz de tudo para livrar seu filho dessas “aberrações”, por traz das câmeras, como é a sua relação com Lennie James?

AKT: É ótima. Ele é como um pai para mim. Ele me chamava até de filho quando estávamos pelo set. Compartilhamos histórias sobre família e amigos. Sabia que ele tem um sotaque britânico forte? Ele é um ótimo ator, você não consegue nem notar o sotaque. Ele tem duas filhas. Então ele tem uma boa relação com crianças. Gostaria de visitá-lo em Londres algum dia.

WDBr: Sobre a escolha do papel, como você foi sua seleção para o elenco?

AKT: Primeiro eu enviei um video meu, porque estávamos em Los Angeles na época. Eu estava trabalhando em outro projeto. Depois que eu enviei o video, fui chamado para ir a Atlanta para me encontrar com o diretor e produtor do elenco. Depois desse encontro, meu agente me ligou para dizer que eu consegui o papel. O bom nisso é que eu moro em Atlanta. Então eu fiquei umas semanas em casa antes de ir a Los Angeles. Me sinto honrado porque o senhor Frank Darabont e a senhorita Gale Anne Hurd me viram como o Duane.

WDBr: O que fez você criar interesse em interpretar Duane?

AKT: Eu sempre amei revistas em quadrinhos, mas nunca havia lido The Walking Dead antes. Logo que ouvi falar da audição, eu fui a loja e comprei algumas revistas de “the walking Dead”. Depois de ler os quadrinhos, me apaixonei pela história e pelo personagem Duane. A história era bem interessante e diferente. O personagem Duane também era bem diferente de muitos dos outros papéis que eu já havia feito. Gosto de atuar como personagens que mostram emoções diferentes.

WDBr: Duane se vê em uma situação em que ele precisa “acelerar” o seu amadurecimento de certa forma, para poder sobreviver em um mundo dominado pelos mortos-vivos. Como é interpretar um personagem assim?

AKT: Tentei me tornar o Duane o máximo que pude, me colocando no lugar dele. Tentei pensar na situação mais difícil que já estive e fui em frente. Isso faz com que tudo se torne mais real para mim. Pensei como me sentiria se vivesse em uma casa sabendo que tem monstros e zumbis do lado de fora esperando para me atacar. Pensei como me sentiria triste se perdesse a minha mãe. Isso me ajudou na preparação para as cenas tristes. Também pensei em como ficaria com raiva dos monstros se eles pegassem a minha mãe. Eu ficaria com tanta raiva deles se fizessem isso. Então eu não poderia só me sentir mal e não fazer nada. Eu sabia que tinha que agir bem maduramente para me proteger e proteger meu pai.

WDBr: Isso reflete na sua personalidade pessoal?

AKT: Na minha vida pessoal, as vezes fico em situações onde eu preciso agir com maturidade. As vezes eu posso querer chorar e desmoronar, e eu escolho não chorar e parar de pensar na situação, e ir em frente.

WDBr: Caso o apocalipse zumbi realmente acontecesse, você acha que conseguiria sobreviver? Faria uma espécie de plano, ou não teria ideia do que fazer?

AKT: Sim. Eu sobreviveria. Acho que eu saberia como bater na cabeça de um zumbi com uma pá. Eu saberia como me esconder deles. Saberia como cobrir as janelas da casa com tábuas e até cozinhar uma lata de feijões. Eu saberia que devo evitar uma multidão de zumbis porque é mais perigoso quando são muitos deles. Com certeza eu poderia derrotar um zumbi de cada vez. Além disso, eu saberia quando ficar dentro de casa, porque zumbis são mais ativos pela parte da noite. Assim seria mais fácil para mim evitá-los. Eu também criaria minha arma dos sonhos, que seria uma motocicleta com um bastão (?) grudado em cada lado do guidão(??), e duas serras elétricas na ponta de cada um. Assim eu poderia andar no meio de um monte de zumbis e cortá-los ao mesmo tempo. Seria divertido.

WDBr: Você já conhecia ou acompanhava os quadrinhos de The Walking Dead?

AKT: Eu comecei a ler quando soube da audição. Agora eu tenho todos os volumes.

WDBr: Caso não conhecia, está acompanhando agora? O que está achando, concorda com os fãs que dizem que a HQ é superior à série, ou acredita que a série realmente fez um trabalho melhor?

AKT: A revista em quadrinhos é demais! Mas a série foi muito bem feita e segue a linha dos quadrinhos. Tem algumas diferenças, mas elas não mudam muito a história. Se a série mudasse muito a história, eu diria que a história em quadrinhos é superior.

WDBr: Já visitou o Brasil? Se não, tem vontade?

AKT: Não, nunca estive no Brasil.
Com certeza. Eu amaria visitar o Brasil. Ouvi dizer que é um país lindo. Eu tenho passaporte e estudo em casa. Então posso ir a qualquer hora.

WDBr: Os fãs daqui estão loucos por The Walking Dead e seu elenco! Estamos torcendo para ver um pouco mais de Duane e seu pai ainda nessa segunda temporada!

WDBr: Seus pais o apoiam em sua carreira, suas escolhas de papéis e coisas assim?

AKT: Sim. Meus pais são meus maiores fãs. Foram eles que tornaram possível eu seguir meu sonho de ser um artista.

WDBr: Como é a relação trabalho-família para você?

AKT: É ótima. Minha mãe ou meu pai sempre estão no set e viajam comigo. Então sempre estamos juntos. Além disso, estudo em casa. Isso faz com que seja mais fácil ir a testes, trabalhar e viajar. Isso não é trabalho para mim porque é divertido demais.
